This collection contains two card-mounted photographs from the Emil Mühl collection. The photographs are by J.C. Burge, and they depict an army field hospital in the vicinity of Kingston, New Mexico, where Mühl served as a civilian "contract surgeon" for the army. Mühl appears in both photos, along with other personnel and wounded.

Emil Mühl was born in Hermann, Missouri on February 13, 1855. He enrolled in a medical college in Indianapolis, graduating with honors in 1881. Upon graduation, he signed up for a duty tour as a civilian "contract surgeon" with the army and was stationed near Kingston in the New Mexico Territory. At the end of this assignment, he established a private medical practice in Albuquerque.
